Health and Safety While Studying Abroad

The health and safety of students while studying abroad should be one of the top priorities of any student exchange institution. While no organization can guarantee the safety of participants, the risks can be significantly reduced if program staff, students, parents, and advisors at the host and home institutions all work together.

Most professional educators and advisors in the study abroad field tend to believe that study in a foreign country is no more dangerous than study in ther home country, however, safety remains a prime concern for all involved. For more specific health and safety information relating to your program, contact your student travel advisor.

Internatonal Students are highly encouraged to consult the U.S. State Department and the Centers for Disease Control for further information, travel precautions, and immunization recommendations for the country where you will be participating in your education abroad opportunity.

Remember to always:

  • Keep in contact with home
  • Stay informed
  • Don’t allow yourself to be vulnerable
  • Register at the Embassy
  • Keep a low profile
  • Stay alert
  • Take precautions

Health and safety information specific to your host country is included in program handbooks, discussed at program orientations, and/or addressed upon arrival in the host country. For any student participating in an outside program, contact your program sponsor for health related information specific to the host country.

A record number of Americans are expected to vote on ovember 4th. Here are answers to some common questions and tips on how to vote at the polls for your candidate, be them Barack Obama or John McCain.

Where Can I Vote?

Where Can I Vote?

1. Am I registered to vote? Where am I registered?

Polling Places? To find out, go to your  State Board of Elections Web site. Click on the “FIND OUT HERE” link at the top of the page. Then, click on “Name Search” and fill in your name, date of birth and zip code. If you’re registered, your name, address and precinct information will appear.

If you no longer live at the address where you are registered, see Question 10.

2. What if I’m not registered? Can I still vote?

No. Voter registration deadline passed last month.

3. When are the polls open? What are the voting Hours?

What time do the polls open?

Voting Times / Polling Hours - From 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., local time.
Voting Day - Tuesday, November 4th.
Anyone in line at 8 p.m. will get to vote.

4. How can I avoid long lines?

Vote between noon and 3 p.m. Precinct traffic mirrors highway traffic. Congestion peaks during morning and evening rush hours, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

5. How can I avoid creating long lines?

Mark up the sample ballot you received in the mail and bring it into the voting booth.

In addition to the candidates for president, congress and other offices, Baltimore’s ballot includes a charter amendment and 15 bond questions. The average unprepared voter will take 9 minutes to get through them, said John T. Willis, a professor at the University of Baltimore and former Secretary of State.

“Studies have shown that anyone who spends more than four or five minutes on a machine is going to create back-ups,” he said.

If you already tossed your sample ballot in the garbage, you can print one from the Internet. Follow the instructions from Question 1. When your voter registration information appears, click on the “sample ballot” link.

6. I hear many people around the nation are voting early. Can I do that too?

No. An early voting statute passed by the General Assembly was ruled unconstitutional. Tuesday you’ll get a chance to decide whether the state should allow early voting in the future.

7. What if I can’t make it to the polls Tuesday. Can I vote absentee?

Yes, but you have to go to your local board of elections in person to pick up an absentee ballot.

8. What machines are we voting on this time?

The same ones as last time — the machines that work like ATMs. If you haven’t voted recently, here is a link to a video demonstrating how the touch-screen machines work: www.mdvotes.org/demo.php

9. What do I need to bring with me to vote?

For most Marylanders, nothing. Most voters are not required to show identification. Just give the poll worker your name, and they’ll ask you to confirm your month and date of birth.

First-time Maryland voters may have to show identification. To learn the state’s identification requirements, call your local elections board or go to the State Board of Elections Web site.

10. Can I vote anywhere I want?

Not if you want your ballot counted.

Because of a ruling from the state’s highest court, you’ve got to vote in the election district and ward in which you live. If you no longer live at the address where you’re registered to vote:

1. Go to the State Board of Elections Web site and click “FIND OUT HERE.”

2. Instead of clicking “name search,” click “address search.” Enter your new address and click “locate a polling place.” Your new precinct will appear.

3. On Election Day, go to that precinct and vote by provisional ballot. DO NOT go to your old precinct.

Again, if your registration is out of date, vote where you live, not where you’re registered. If you don’t have access to the Internet, call your local elections board and they’ll tell you where to go.

11. Can I wear my Sarah-cuda T-shirt to the polls?

Yes, voters are permitted to wear campaign merchandise. But don’t linger around after you vote, or a poll worker will have to ask you to leave.

12. If my house is in foreclosure, will I be able to vote?

Absolutely. Maryland’s Attorney General Douglas Gansler has said rumors that people who lost their homes can’t vote are untrue and “repugnant.”

13. Computers are evil. I want to speak to a real person.

Great news for people wary of the Internet. The State Board of Elections has contracted out incoming calls to a call center that can handle a larger volume of requests, said Ross Goldstein, the state’s deputy elections director.

14. Are absentee ballots always counted?

Yes, but after Election Day.

15. Confirming Your Vote Counts!

Before leaving the booth, please make sure that your vote really counts by confirming the machine fully registered it. Some voting machines are experiencing glitches, like when Oprah Winfrey reported lat week.

16. Where Do I Vote? Where Am I Registered to Vote?

Remember, on election day you must vote in the precinct where you are registered . Go to http://www.vote411.org/pollingplacebystate.php to find out the location you can vote safelly.

17. Voting Polls- 2008 Presidential Poll

Who will be the next President of the United States? Latest polls today - the last day before election day - show a reasonable margin for Senator Barack Obama.

John McCain
45.9%

Barack Obama
51%

I refuse to vote for either one!
3.1%

Total Votes: 10955

Here are 15 Search Tips for Google. Hopefully this info is helpful to many of us:

1. Google Calculator
How this works is your type an equation into the search field and it will give you the result. Example: 2*4 - 23*5 + 1000. After you type this in and click search or enter it will give you the result. You can do addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/), to the power of (^), and square root of a number (sqrt).

2. Dictionary Definitions
You can get the definition of a word by typing “define:” followed by the word. Example: define: canucks. This will get you the definition of canucks.

3. Search for a specific title
Suppose you came across a website you thought was awesome but you forgot to bookmark the site and only remembered the title of it and wanted to find it again. Well you can search by title with Google to hopefully find that website a bit more easily. All you need to do is type “intitle: then the title”. By doing this you will only get results of websites with that line in the title.

4. Google Converter
This is a very useful one if you need to convert something from one unit to another unit quickly. All you need to do is type something like “5km in miles” and it will do the conversion for you. I also use it a lot for changing from Fahrenheit to Celsius (25F to C).

5. Compare Currencies
Google search engine has a built in currency converter so you can go from one currency to another. This is done by simply typing something like “1 USD in CAN” and press enter and it will do the conversion for you.

6. Weather Updates
If you want to know what the weather will be like in your area you can type something like “London weather” and it will give you the conditions in that area.

7. Search for specific file types
If you want to find a certain type of file on the Internet it is normally pretty difficult to find what you are looking for but with the use of Google search you can find file types a bit more easily. You can search for file types by doing something like “Guide to build a good website filetypept”. That will look for files with that name and the file type of a powerpoint presentation.

8. Search on a particular website
If you want to search a particular website from Google you can do this by typing “hitch DVD site:www.amazon.com”. By typing in site: and then the website it will search that website for what you have type before site:.

9. Get the local time anywhere
Want to know the time in London now? You can do that by typing “what time is it London” in the search bar. You can also do it by typing “time (location)” without the quotes.

10. Remove unwanted search results

Have you ever wanted to search for something in particular but wanted to remove some of the search results? You can do this by type -something after the search term to remove it from the search results. Example: James Bond -movie. What that would do is remove the search results of James Bond that included the movie so you would find other things like news, books, etc.

11. Search for URLs
Want to search for a particular URL? You can do so by putting a “_, . , -” in between the words instead of a space. Example: What_are_you_talking_about. This would search for URLs that included those words.

12. Track Flight Status
Want to track a particular flight status? You can do that if you know the airline and flight number. You just need to type in the airline and the flight number to get the status. Example: British airways flight 5. This will bring you the results of this flight from this particular airline.

13. Search Google Groups by the subject line
You can search Google groups by subject line with this little trick. Type “insubject:then topic here” and you will get the Google groups with that subject line.

14. Find Related Sites
This trick will probably be familiar to a bunch of people but is helpful for finding related sites. What you do is type “related:www.site.com”. So if you wanted to find an alternative to the website your are looking at that you may have liked you can use this feature.

15. Find Links to a specific URL

This is pretty helpful for finding backlinks to your website. If you want to find out what websites link to your website you can type “link:www.yoursite.com” and you will get all the results of the websites that link back to yours.

First Solar and SolarCity Team Up for Residential Thin-Film Solar Panels

In a move that will bring thin-film solar panels to the U.S. residential market, First Solar fslr has signed a deal to provide installer SolarCity with 100 megawatts’ worth of solar arrays over the next five years. First Solar is also investing $25 million into SolarCity, the Silicon Valley startup backed by Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk.

This is First Solar’s initial foray into the home market — and apparently the first of any thin-film solar module maker. Thin-film solar panels are made by depositing solar cells on sheets of glass or flexible material and use little of the expensive silicon that forms the heart of more bulky conventional solar modules. That makes thin-film panels cheaper, although they are less efficient at converting sunlight into electricity. And thin is in for homeowners who prefer less-obtrusive panels on their roofs.

New Residential Solar Panel Technology

SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive told Green Wombat that First Solar’s more economical panels will allow the company to expand to the East Coast and other areas that do not heavily subsidize solar. SolarCity installs solar panels at no cost to the homeowner and then leases them back for a monthly charge. “What matters is not efficiency but cost per kilowatt-hour,” Rive says, noting that solar programs like California’s reduce rebates to panel makers as the number of installations increase. “We need solutions that address declining subsidies.”

Added SolarCity communications director Jonathan  Bass: “When we talk to customers their four biggest priorities are cost, cost, cost and aesthetics.”

Beginning in early 2009, SolarCity will start receiving 20 megawatts’ worth of First Solar panels a year. Rive won’t disclose how many megawatts SolarCity currently installs annually, but 20 megawatts would seem to represent a significant expansion of the startup’s operations. Over the past two years, SolarCity has installed solar arrays for 2,500 homes and small businesses and a spokeswoman says the First Solar deal would supply enough panels for about 5,000 homes a year.

The deal also marks a move to diversify on the part of Tempe-Ariz.-based First Solar (FSLR)  — known as the Google (GOOG) of solar for its once-stratospheric stock price. The company, backed by Wal-Mart’s (WMT) Walton family, had primarily focused on the overseas commercial rooftop market. This year though First Solar — which reports third-quarter earnings Wednesday — has signed deals to build thin-film solar power plants for utilities like Southern California Edison (EIX) and Sempra (SRE).
